Welcome!

There are many reasons i started this blog. But the most compelling reason for me to start this blog was so that i have a way of dumping online resources to music here. There are many videos on youtube or google videos for example that i like, and would like ready access to without having to search for them. So i figured i could use this blog as a repository of all that i find interesting or worth a listen in the music world.

A word about the title of the blog for those who are not familiar with the language - 'Aashiyana' means 'house' and 'mausiki' means 'music'. Hence, Aashiyana-e-mausiki literally translates into 'House of Music'. I am aware that this is an ambitious name and that the narrow scope of this blog (as outlined below) means that it isn't actually the house of music but the house of particular genres of music and not a very comprehensive one at that. But i like the name and that's that.

Much as i like to listen to all kinds of music, in this blog i will mainly concentrate on sufi, hindustani and carnatic music. This is not set in stone, of course, and i may very well venture out this realm. But even when i do, it will probably be in the direction of folk music from around the world. You won't, for example, see the likes Bryan Adams or Sting or The Beatles in this space. Not because i don't like their brands of music but simply because i don't feel that this is the space to showcase it.

With that i'd like to start this blog off with this brilliant Qawwali by the inimitable Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

edit: The embedding doesn't seem to be working quite right... here's the link to the video.

  1. You kinda need to blog more. Aashiyana has only one resident so far!
